What changes when you plan your bridal makeup on a timeline

Great wedding makeup starts months before the wedding morning. Most of the problems we see on a Dallas wedding day come from timing, not technique: a new serum that caused a breakout the week of, a brow wax that left redness, or a spray tan that was still developing during the trial match. This timeline is what we walk our own brides through. It works for any bridal makeup style, from soft glam to airbrush.

1. Book your bridal makeup artist 6 to 12 months out

Spring and fall Saturdays in Dallas book up first, and October is one of the busiest wedding months of the year. Once your venue and date are set, reserve your artist. If your party includes bridesmaids and mothers, share an estimated headcount at booking so the artist can plan enough time or bring an assistant. Our bridal makeup pricing guide covers what changes the quote.

2. Start a steady skincare routine 6 months out

Pick a simple routine you can stick to: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer suited to your skin type, and daily SPF (not optional in Texas). If you want to add a retinoid or an exfoliating acid, start it now so your skin has months to adjust. If you have acne, rosacea, or pigmentation you want to treat, see a dermatologist at this stage, not the month of the wedding.

3. Schedule your bridal makeup trial 2 to 3 months out

By then you should have your dress, a sense of your hair style, and ideally your veil or accessories. Bring photos of looks you love and looks you don’t. Wear a top close to your neckline color. Our bridal makeup trial checklist and trial questions cover what to bring and ask. If you plan to spray tan, do a test tan before the trial so the foundation is matched to your wedding-day skin tone.

4. Freeze your skincare and skip new facials 4 weeks out

No new products, no peels, no first-time facials, and no new injectables in the last month. Anything that could cause a reaction or purging needs time to settle. If you get regular facials with a trusted esthetician, keep your last one about 1 to 2 weeks before the wedding and ask for a gentle, hydrating treatment rather than extractions.

5. Shape brows and handle hair removal 1 to 2 weeks out

Waxing or threading can leave redness or small bumps for a day or two, so do it at least a week before. Tint brows at the same appointment if you want. After that, only tweeze strays. Lash lifts and lash tints also belong in this window. If you want lash extensions, get them about a week out and let your artist know so we don’t apply mascara or strip lashes over them.

6. Spray tan 2 to 3 days before the wedding

This gives the tan time to develop and the first rinse to even out before your makeup is applied. A tan done the day before often transfers onto the dress and can make your foundation match look off. Tell your artist the shade you used at the trial so we can adjust if the final tan came out deeper or lighter.

7. Keep the night before simple

Cleanse, moisturize, drink water, and go to bed. Avoid heavy salt and extra alcohol at the rehearsal dinner if you are prone to puffiness. Do not try a new sheet mask or face treatment the night before.

8. Arrive at your chair with clean, moisturized skin

On the wedding morning, wash your face, apply a light moisturizer and lip balm, and come to your appointment with no makeup or SPF-heavy sunscreen on. Wear a button-front or zip-front top so you can change without pulling anything over your hair and face. We handle priming, setting, and heat-proofing for Dallas weather from there.

FAQ

How far in advance should I book bridal makeup in Dallas?

6 to 12 months for most dates. For peak fall and spring Saturdays, closer to 12 months is safer, especially if you have a large bridal party.

When should I do my bridal makeup trial?

About 2 to 3 months before the wedding. Some brides book it on the same day as their engagement photos or bridal portraits so they can see the look on camera. See our engagement photo makeup tips.

Should I get a facial the week of my wedding?

Only if it’s a treatment you’ve had before with no reaction, and ideally 1 to 2 weeks out rather than days before. Never try a new facial, peel, or product the week of your wedding.
