6 Ways to Switch Your Wedding Makeup From Ceremony to Reception in Dallas

Quick Answer

6 ways to switch your wedding makeup from ceremony to reception: (1) move to a deeper or bolder lip, (2) smoke out the eyes along the outer corner and lower lash line, (3) add or build up lashes, (4) blot, re-powder, and add a warmer glow to the skin, (5) change the makeup along with your hair and reception dress, and (6) book your artist to stay through the switch so it takes 15 minutes, not 45.

What changes between the ceremony and the reception

More Dallas brides are planning two wedding looks: a soft, timeless ceremony look and a more glamorous reception look. It often goes with a second dress, a hair change, or a move from daylight to a dark ballroom or dance floor. You don’t need to start over. A good ceremony base is built to carry into the evening, and the switch is about adding intensity in a few places. It also works well for multi-part weddings, like the fusion receptions we do for Indian weddings in Dallas.

1. Switch to a deeper or bolder lip

The lip is the fastest, most visible change. Going from a rosy nude to a berry, red, or deep mauve instantly makes the look more evening. Remove the ceremony lip fully with a balm first, then line and fill the new color. Choose a long-wear formula, because this is the lip that has to last through dinner, toasts, and dancing.

2. Smoke out the eyes

Add a deeper shade to the outer corner and crease, and smudge it along the lower lash line. A shimmer on the center of the lid picks up the reception lighting. This keeps your ceremony eye look as the foundation and simply builds on top, so it takes about 5 minutes.

3. Add or build up lashes

Many brides wear light, natural lashes for the ceremony and add a few more clusters for the reception. If you already wear a strip lash, layering a couple of clusters on the outer corner adds drama without removing anything. It’s a small change that shows up clearly in dance-floor photos.

4. Refresh the skin and add warmth

By the reception your skin has been through photos, hugs, and possibly tears and outdoor heat. Blot first, then lightly press powder only where needed. Add a warmer blush or a touch of bronzer and a stronger highlight. Evening lighting is dimmer and warmer, so the skin can take more glow than in daylight photos.

5. Change the makeup along with the hair and dress

If you’re switching into a reception dress or taking your hair down or up, plan all three changes together at your trial. A sleek ponytail or updo shows more of the face and usually pairs well with a stronger eye or lip. A low-back or sparkly reception dress can take more shimmer. We plan both looks at the trial so the day-of switch is fast. See our trial checklist for what to bring.

6. Book your artist to stay for the switch

Most brides get about 15 to 20 minutes between the end of the cocktail hour and the grand entrance. An artist who stays on site (or returns) can finish the switch in that window while you change. If you’re doing it yourself, have your lip color, a liner, lashes, and a powder laid out in the bridal suite ahead of time. Ask about on-site touch-up time when you book; it’s one of the factors in Dallas bridal makeup pricing.

FAQ

Do I need a completely different wedding makeup look for the reception?

No. Most reception looks build on the ceremony makeup. Removing everything and starting over takes too long and irritates the skin. Changing the lip, eyes, and lashes gives the biggest difference.

How long does a reception makeup change take?

About 15 to 20 minutes with an artist, depending on how many changes you want. Plan it into your timeline alongside the dress and hair change.

Can bridesmaids change their makeup for the reception too?

They can, but most don’t. A quick lip change is the easiest option for bridesmaids who want an evening look without extra artist time.
